I can’t believe it has already been over a week since I landed in Lahore! 4 workshops, about 200 artists, curators, and teachers, and a whole new appreciation of Jacob Lawrence, The Migration Series, and the power of collaboration and storytelling through art. Just like Lawrence and other artists during the Harlem Renaissance, participants here have worked together to tell their stories- some were stories of identity and personal struggle, others were stories about Pakistani history, from the ancient to the contemporary. I have been struck this week by how similar we all are. We all want to make a difference and we all want our voices to be heard (particularly by those we feel aren’t listening!)
Talented teenagers as far as the eye could see at today’s workshop!
Working with the U.S. Department of State, I’ll lead two-day intensive workshops in Lahore and Islamabad for 100 emerging artists from throughout Pakistan. I’ll also conduct workshops and discussions with curators, gallery owners, and arts educators to further build capacity for artistic endeavors in Pakistan.
