Warming Steel Bodies

As we put the finishing touches on the Antony Gormley: Drawing Space exhibition yesterday, we heard that two of Gormley’s sculptures on Crosby Beach in Merseyside had been covered in cozy outfits by a New York-based knitwear artist.

Ring any bells? In February, the Phillips and Looped Yarn Works covered the Dupont neighborhood in hand-knit and crocheted hearts. Unlike these outdoor works, the sculptures on view in the Phillips won’t need any help staying warm this summer.

Cupid’s Story

You may have noticed, among the sea of knit hearts, a cuddly cupid greeting you from a nearby tree as you entered The Phillips Collection last week. Meet his maker 12-year-old knitter, Antonia Harrison.

Antonia Jane Harrison started knitting in November 2008 because she wanted colorful, comfortable socks. She is a self-taught and fearless knitter and crocheter. Antonia is currently knitting her way through 2012 with a pair of socks each month. She loves to make toys and designed the pattern for a unicorn (pictured above), modifying Hansi Singh’s Jackalope pattern. Antonia knit the cupid for our project without a pattern, using scrap yarn from her stash. She loves to hang out at The Yarn Spot in Wheaton and Looped Yarn Works in Dupont Circle. After experiencing a yarn crawl last summer in Philadelphia, Antonia is planning a yarn crawl for her 13th birthday.
