Inspired by Jasper Johns’s use of American Sign Language in his recent work, the Phillips organized brief introductions to ASL during Phillips after 5 last week. Later this month, the Phillips and the International Club of DC team up to offer weekly French, Italian, Spanish, German, and Russian meet-ups with expert native speakers in Tryst at the Phillips cafe.

British Invasion

Last week, in honor of Antony Gormley’s current exhibition, we threw a British-inspired soiree with the British Embassy, Washington, to celebrate all things great about Britain. While temperatures spiked outside, cool galleries helped guests imagine they’d journeyed across the pond. Ambassador and Lady Westmacott stopped by. Models from Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie donned BurberryCharlotte Olympia, Issa, and Stella McCartney, and DJ Danny Harris rocked the Music Room with a ’60s British Invasion set.

Let’s Move: Double Dutch

I recently bought a jump rope for exercise but also out of nostalgia for all the fun I had jumping as a kid. So I was looking forward to the DC Retro Jumpers coming to the Phillips for this month’s Going Dutch Phillips after 5. It took me a minute to get that sneaky connection (Double Dutch, of course!) As these photos show, lots of people have hidden Double Dutch talents and with the help of the DC Retro Jumpers, they put on quite a show! Michelle Obama would be proud.
